This course meets Licensing & Consumer Services' qualification training requirements and all of the learning outcomes for this subject area.
This course involves approximately 25 hours of on-line learning. For those who are new to Building Codes, additional time will be needed for study.
Interpret and apply the current BC Building Code with confidence. Along with a focus on Division B, Part 9 you will explore related standards and relevant enactments relating to residential construction.

- Soil bearing capacity and problematic soil conditions
- Seismic and climatic zones in BC and the related impacts on residential construction
- Structural materials and methods of assembly
- The building envelope, keeping the weather out, and resolving simple issues
- Sound transmission into residential units and resolving simple problems
- Heating and ventilation systems controlling indoor air quality
- Installation of interior finishes
- Limiting distance and spatial separation
- Requirements for the inclusion of secondary suites and multiple occupancies
British Columbia Fire Code and application to residential construction
The Public Health Act and regulations with regards to the design and operation of septic systems
Understanding of how local bylaws may affect residential construction and where to locate the bylaws
Application of the Building Code and other relevant provincial enactments in areas with no local bylaws
Training category (Group A): This course is available for either qualification training or informal continuing professional development (CPD).
- Qualification training: Includes completion of a 3rd party proctored exam
- Informal CPD: Participants only complete the course and do not take the exam
- Formal CPD: This course is not available for formal CPD credits
Course availability: Online learning allows you to work at your own pace from the comfort of your own computer any time of the day or night.
Timeframes: You will be allotted 6 months from the date of course registration to complete the online education. Extensions can be purchased if additional time is required.
Prerequisite: While there is no prerequisite for this course, for those new to the industry, completion of a Construction Fundamentals or a Construction Technology course is highly recommended.
Tuition: $449 + tax for a limited time.
The tuition includes the online education and an electronic copy of the course manual. You will need to obtain a paper copy of the British Columbia Building Code 2012 to reference during the course and for the open book exam. The publication contains two volumes which, together, comprise "Book 1" and can be purchased directly from the British Columbia provincial Queen's Printer. "Book II" consisting of one volume, contains the British Columbia Plumbing Code, 2012. The cost of this publication is not included in the course tuition. Proof of course completion: Upon completion of the online course, participants will be able to log into our learning management system to view and print a certificate of completion for informal CPD. An additional qualification (core competency) training certificate will be provided to those individuals who successfully complete the final exam. The exam results will be available and kept electronically in your student profile.
Qualification (Core Competency) Training Exam: The 3rd party proctored exam for this course (applicable for individuals completing qualification training) is open book in a multiple choice, multiple answer and true/false format. There is no exam for participants taking the course for informal CPD training.
Proctor testing centers: Licensing & Consumer Services requires 3rd party proctoring for online exams for qualifications (core competency) training. When you are close to completing the online course, you will need to make arrangements with a proctor testing location to proctor your online exam for you. Passing grade: The passing grade is 70%.
